Feeding and management of the fancy carps
* The column of the website concerning the feeding of fancy carps and prevention and cure of the fish diseases only represents private opinions and is for reference only *
It is recommended to sterilize the rearing ponds in spring and autumn.

Feeding and management in January
If controlling the water temperature to below 8℃, the carps will hibernate.
If moving the carps to other place, pay attention to the difference in temperature of the water of the rearing ponds.
Should the difference in temperature be up to over 5℃, it may endanger the life of carps.
| Supply of fish food |
Do not supply fish food in principle. When the water temperature rises to over 10℃, supply 2~3 granules of the fish food for each fish every week (low-water temperature feed)
|
| Low-water drainage |
Drainage shall be done every 2~3 days for
circular filtration, which must not be conducted
by water pump.
Use the aeratioon equipment to elevate the
water level to about 30cm from the bottom
of the rearing pond.

|
| Fresh water of fishponds |
After entering into summer, often infuse 10~20% of the fresh water
|
| Solution for curing the diseases |
If the body surface of the fish is accompanied by white objects or is as if being covered by a layer of cotton, salt shall be put into the ponds as per 5kg/t.
Phenomenon of winterkill may occur if the water temperature is lower than 3℃.
When the water temperature is lower than 6℃, use the electric cooker, boiler and other equipments to elevate the temperature.

|
Cold
Symptoms at the initial stage Part of the fish body looks like being covered by a layer of white thin-film.
If conditions of the disease are worsened, the skin covered by the white thin-film will shed, result in anemia and turn white.
Symptoms at the advanced stage Skin will ulcerate with the muscle revealed, and death will be caused out of the infection of bacteria and parasites for the second time.
Reason for cold and therapeutic methods
Infections of ciliophora and white spot disease protozoan
- Sprinkle potassium permanganate 2k/t into the fishponds,
and dip in for 3~5 days (drug for three times within one
week.)
- Sprinkle formalin 25ml/t into the fishponds and dip
in for 3~5 days (drug for three times within one week).
Cold caused out of the too low-water temperature
- Elevate the water temperature to around 16℃ gradually
(must not elevate the temperature by more than 5℃ at once.)
- Sprinkle salt 5kg/t and parazann D 100ml/t and dip
in for one week.
- Sprinkle salt 5 kg/t and terramycin (OTC for fishery
use in bulk) 50g/t and dip in for one week.

Feeding and management in March
The lengthy winter-sleep period ends finally, and enters
into the active phase of carps.
Supply a tiny amount of feed (2~3 granules fish food for
each fish) under the low water temperature once every other
2~3 days. Supplying excessive amount of feed for one time
will result in indigestion and neopathy and thus further
cause death of carps.
※Since carps have no stomach in their bodies and just wake
up from the winter-sleep state, we shall supply a small
amount of fish food at the very beginning so that the viscera
within the fish bodies can become acclimated, and gradually
increase the number of bait casting as time goes on.
| Supply of fish food |
Supply the fish food every other 2~3 days (2~3 granules for each fish)
In order to avoid the indigestion, dip the fish food in the water for a period of time and soften the fish food prior to bait casting.
|
| Low-water drainage |
Drain water once every day at the beginning
Clean the sediment collector once every week.
|
| Circular filtration |
Use jetting equipments rather than water pump for circular filtration gradually.
Use aeratioon equipments to elevate the water-level from the bottom of the fishpond
|
| Fresh water of fishponds |
Add 5% of fresh water into the fishponds
|
| Solution for curing the diseases |
The soiled pool water will produce the pathogenic bacteria and cause the bacterial infection of carps.
- There is cotton-shaped mould stain on the
body surface of the fish → white cloud disease,
aqueous mould stain disease
- Pay attention to avoiding aqualium clinic
and erythema disease.
- When the water temperature rises to over
12℃, please sprinkle mazotenn and antiskinning
agent to the fishponds.
|
|
Management concerning fish food
- Please throw away all the fish food purchased last year.
- When “the unhealthy status of carps” is reported, it
is most likely that the overdue fish food is put into
the ponds, if so, no wonder the carps will fall ill.
- All the fish food shall be put in the ponds within 3
months after unsealing.
- Even if the fish food vacuumized will also be oxidized
gradually, therefore, there is often fresh fish food prepared
in carp stores. You’d better purchase fish food from the
store with a rapid purchasing speed of fish food when
you want to purchase some.
Attentions for sterilization in spring and autumn
Why do the carps often die in spring and autumn? Why does
the water of fishponds become muddy? Aquatic bacteria (filtration
bacteria and malignant microorganisms and so on) are divided
into the bacteria born in summer and that born in winter,
which will have changes when the temperature is between
13℃~ 18℃, while the water temperature of 13℃~ 18℃ is usually
the temperature of spring and autumn, when is the most dangerous
period for the carps. Since the change period of water temperature
is also the most active phase of the aquatic bacteria, the
bacteria having the filtration function cannot function
thus making the pool water become muddy, causing the massive
propagation of bacteria and parasites and resulting in ciliophora
disease and other carp diseases. Neglecting the aforesaid
phenomenon will possibly lead to the death of carps. Various
consultations concerning the carp diseases are mostly caused
out of the negligence of the sterilization in spring and
autumn.

Feeding and management in April
Rising of the water temperature makes the carps more joyful
and more freely.
At this time more feeds and be supplied, but taking the
weak constitution of the carps that just wake up from the
state of winter-sleep into account, must not put in excessive
feeds at once.
(When carp diseases happen and diseases are caused out of
the damage of viscera, carps may die because of the untimely
treatment.) April is the season for feeding fish in wild
ponds.
| Supply of fish food |
Supply the fish food for less than one third carps within the fishpond once every day (must not supply excessive fish food even if the appetite of carps is great).
|
| Low-water drainage |
Clean the sediment collector or ecological filterbank once every day (do not clean all the tanks within one day but one by one in several days.)
|
| Circular filtration |
Circular filtration must not be conducted by water pump.
Keep the jetting equipments and aeratioon equipments in good order.
|
| Fresh water of fishponds |
Add more than 10% of fresh water into the fishponds.
|
| Solution for curing the diseases |
- Pay attention to avoiding aqualium clinic
and erythema disease. (When the water temperature
rises to over 12℃, please sprinkle mazotenn
and antiskinning agent to the fishponds.)
- There is white thin-film accompanied on
the body surface of the fish.
→Infections of ciliophora and white spot disease
protozoan
Sprinkle potassium permanganate 2k/t into
the fishponds, and dip in for 3~5 days (drug
for three times within one week.)
- Carp diseases (gill disease)
- Squama erection disease (Aeromonas bacteria)

Feeding
carps in wild ponds
When feeding carps in wild ponds, cut and sterilize the
fish food one week in advance.
※If the carp in the wild ponds falls ill, it cannot be cured
even if it has been salvaged and we cannot help it, accordingly,
we must formulate a considerate feeding solution.
For the sick carps, defer the implementation of feeding
carps in the wild ponds.
The major purpose of feeding carps in the wild ponds is
to enhance the constitution of the carps as soon as possible.
In addition, feeding carps in your own spring water for
a long-term may restore the vivid luster of the carps again.
Carps may eat foods such as shrimps, river snail and algae
in wild ponds and freely swim in the wide ponds, which enable
the carps to grow healthily in the nature.
But this does not mean that all the carps are suitable to
be fed in wild ponds.
The cases that the injured fish cannot be cured in time
even if having been salvaged by fishnet thus finally resulting
in death occur frequently.
In spite of the saying of “letting the lovely kids travel
by themselves”, allowing the carps to swim for a while in
the fishponds in autumn is only a kind of individual interest
rather than an ideal method for feeding.

Feeding and
management in May
When the water temperature rises to around 20℃, the appetite
of carps will be greater and their activities will be more
frequent. May is the spawning season for carps.
| Supply of fish food |
Supply the fish food for less than one third
carps within the fishpond once every day (must
not supply excessive fish food even if the
appetite of carps is great).
|
| Low-water drainage |
Clean the sediment collector at least twice
every day and the filterbank once every week
(do not clean all the tanks within one day
but one by one in several days.)
|
| Circular filtration |
Circular filtration must not be conducted by water pump.
Keep the jetting equipments and aeratioon equipments in good order.
|
| Fresh water of fishponds |
Add more than 10% of fresh water into the fishponds.
|
| Solution for curing the diseases |
- Pay attention to the gill rot, oral lesions,
tail rot and others as well as gill disease
bacteria.
- Pay attention to avoiding aqualium clinic
and erythema disease.

Gill
disease
In spite of still being alive and frolic, carps turn their
white bellies and die in the following day. Have you ever
met with such problems? The main reason is that carps may
have infected gill disease, the most awful disease for the
golden carps.
Generally, a carp infected the gill disease (there is something
wrong in the gill) may leave far away from the shoal, swim
alone to the corner of the fishpond, put its mouth out the
water surface and throw away the fish food. If you find
the carps haven’t eaten any feed but the number of opening
and closing their mouths (gill covers) is remarkably more
than the other carps, they may have infected the gill disease.

than the other carps, they may have infected the gill disease.
If you salvage the carps and observe their gill covers,
you may find that part of the gill has turned white or been
rotten, and the structure has been destroyed. The gill of
healthy carps generally shows the comb-like shape and red
color. When the bright red turns pink and then hoary, and
when the entire gill structure has finally turned white,
there is no other way but wait for death, as the gill of
fish is like the lung of human beings that the destroyed
structure will result in the difficult breath and death
out of suffocation.
Since the gill disease bacteria have weak endurance against
salt, therefore, we may put the salt water of 7% concentration
into the vessels like basins and dip in for 10~20 seconds
for sterilization. If the carps faint and lie flat, put
them back into the fishponds immediately.
Strictly abide by the time specified.
Feeding and
management in June
The season of plum rains is the season that brings the most
difficulty in implementation of the management of the water
quality.
Recently, it is said that the rains contain the “acid substances”
ingredients, which, therefore, may cause some difficulty
in feeding the golden carps. In order to prevent the acid
rains from flowing into the fishponds, we may use the water
quality stabilizer “Shuihuiyuan”
| Supply of fish food |
Supply the fish food for less than one fifth
carps within the fishpond for three times
every day.
|
| Low-water drainage |
Clean the sediment collector at least twice
every day and more than once every month,
and the filterbank once every week (do not
clean all the tanks within one day but one
by one in several days.)
|
| Circular filtration |
Usually keep the water pumps and jetting
equipments running and often use the aeration
equipments.
|
| Fresh water of fishponds |
Add more than 10% of fresh water into the fishponds.

Aqualium
clinic and erythema disease
The breeding season of the bacteria of aqualium clinic
and erythema disease is in the seasons of spring and autumn
when the water temperature has exceeded 12℃.
Having infected such pathogens, the carps may swim to the
bottom of the fishpond and rub their bodies against the
protuberance again and again. If observing the carps carefully,
you may find that there are extremely small round parasites
on the body surface of the fish, and the threadlike exiguous,
long and narrow parasites among the squamas, which may accordingly
destroy the body surface of the fish and make the fish infected
all kinds of bacteria and pathogens, as well as lead to
other complications.
Solutions
- Sprinkle mazotenn for fishery use (liquid 20 %, 25ml/t,
powder 0.5 g/t) into the fishponds and dip in for 3~5
days.
- Sprinkle the antiskinning agent as per the percentage
of 1~2 g/t into the fishponds and dip in for 1 week ~
10 days. It may be used together with mazotenn. Sterilization
effect can be achieved by using the medicine for once
only.
※ ※ Mazotenn may lustrate the fry of aqualium clinic, but
is useless to the nit and adult of the aqualium clinic,
so it shall be sprinkled for 3 times every other 10 days.
